    The new power of algorithms: How AI is destroying journalism – and reinventing it

    The machine speaks with your voice

    It was a video no one should have seen. Gayle King, the respected CBS Mornings host, spoke directly to the camera about her alleged weight-loss secret: "Ladies, honestly, I didn't expect my weight loss to generate so many questions. My direct messages on Instagram are flooded." Her voice sounded familiar, her face moved naturally—only the words didn't match her lip movements. And Gayle King never recorded the video for the diet product "Artipet."

    "I posted a video promoting my radio show on August 31st, and they manipulated my voice and video to make it appear I was promoting it," King wrote on Instagram. "I have never heard of or used this product! Please don't be fooled by these AI videos..."

    King's experience is no longer an isolated incident. Deepfakes have targeted journalists at news outlets such as CNN, CBS, BBC, and VOA, impersonating prominent journalists such as Anderson Cooper, Clarissa Ward, and Gayle King. What was once science fiction is now digitally accessible reality: Artificial intelligence can not only write text, but also imitate human faces and voices so perfectly that even experts have difficulty detecting the fake.

    The frightening statistics behind it: There are three times as many video deepfakes of all kinds and eight times as many voice deepfakes posted online this year compared to the same period in 2022, reports DeepMedia, a company that works on detection tools.

    But the artificial intelligence revolution in journalism isn't limited to the murky world of deepfakes. It permeates every aspect of news production: from automated article generation to personalized content curation, from real-time fact-checking to precise audience segmentation. The question is no longer whether AI will transform journalism—it's already doing so. The crucial question is: Will we be able to control this transformation, or will it control us?

    Europe is building the boundaries of the AI future

    While Silicon Valley is developing AI systems at the speed of venture capital, Europe has taken a different approach: regulation before innovation. The EU AI Regulation (AI Act) is the world's first comprehensive legal framework for AI, entering into force on August 1, 2024. But for the media sector, this pioneering achievement harbors unexpected pitfalls.

    Professor Natali Helberger criticizes the AI Act for offering “generally fewer legal safeguards and fewer legal requirements for media organizations” – a notable gap in a regulation that aims to promote trustworthy AI.

    The problem of editorial control is becoming the central interpretive question of our time: Article 50 of the AI Regulation requires that AI-generated or manipulated texts published for public information on matters of public interest must disclose that the content was artificially generated or manipulated. But what exactly constitutes "editorial control"? And when must consumers be explicitly informed about AI involvement?

    The answers to these questions are more than academic quibbles. They define nothing less than the future of truth in democratic societies.

    Agnes Stenbom, an industry expert, warns: Media organizations should not rely entirely on the AI Act, especially since it is still under development, but rather seek dialogue and cooperation among themselves to find common solutions.

    The algorithms of bias

    Behind the dazzling promises of the AI revolution lies a grim truth: algorithms are only as objective as the people who program them and the data they are trained with. Bias – systematic distortion – is the specter that haunts the editorial offices of Europe.

    A recent analysis of 14 scientific publications identified bias as the most common ethical concern regarding the adoption of generative AI technologies in media organizations. These biases manifest themselves in various, often subtle forms:

    • Selection bias in the selection of news topics: Which stories are classified as “important” by algorithms?
    • Confirmation bias caused by algorithmic recommendation systems: Do AI systems reinforce existing echo chambers?
    • Demographic distortions: Whose voices are heard and whose are ignored?

    A concrete example from practice: If an AI system has been trained primarily with texts from male, white journalists from Western countries, it will consider this perspective as “normal” and systematically underrepresent or misinterpret other viewpoints.

    The German population is particularly skeptical about this aspect. A representative study by the Artificial Intelligence Opinion Monitor (MeMo:KI) with 1,035 participants found that the use of AI in editorial offices is viewed very critically. Respondents see little improvement in journalistic quality through AI and the majority favor strict regulation.

    The Paris Charter: A Manifesto for Survival

    In November 2023, 32 experts from 20 countries gathered in Paris to create what many considered impossible: a global ethical consensus on AI in journalism. Chaired by Nobel Peace Prize winner and journalist Maria Ressa, the commission developed the Paris Charter on AI and Journalism—the first international ethical benchmark of its kind.

    Maria Ressa warns urgently: "Artificial intelligence could provide remarkable services to humanity, but it clearly has the potential to increase the manipulation of minds on a scale never seen before in history."

    The charter establishes ten basic principles that should serve as a compass through the ethical storms of the AI revolution:

    1. Ethics must guide technological decisions in the media
    2. Human decision-making must remain at the center of editorial decisions
    3. Media must help society distinguish between authentic and synthetic content
    4. Media must participate in global AI governance

    “As essential guardians of the right to information, journalists, media outlets and journalistic support groups should play an active role in the governance of AI systems,” the charter states.

    But fine words alone won't suffice. The real challenge lies in implementation—and in the question of whether an industry already fighting for its economic survival can muster the resources and will to prioritize ethical standards over short-term efficiency gains.

    German media in the AI experiment

    While international debates rage, German media companies are already experimenting with the future. The Spiegel Publishing House is considered a pioneer and has been using AI for years in various editorial applications: from text dubbing and transcription to evaluating user contributions. Particularly innovative was the use of image generators such as Midjourney for cover stories on "The End of Truth" – with strict transparency towards users.

    Reuters Germany has taken a different approach: With "Fact Genie," they developed an in-house tool that scans press releases in seconds and suggests headlines to the editorial team. Sabine Wollrab, Reuters Bureau Chief for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, emphasizes, however: "Trust is one of our selling points. Reuters is a very trustworthy brand. And we don't want to sell that for AI."

    The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung shows what selective AI integration can look like: It uses AI specifically for the optimization of digital business, dubbing, transcription and archiving, but categorically excludes original contributions with AI-generated text.

    The Rheinische Post: An AI-supported assistant handles customer calls around the clock and has made the company one of the most efficient call center operators in the media industry, reports Margret Seeger, Director of Digital Publishing and Head of AI at the Rheinische Post Media Group.

    The Hallucinations of the Machines

    Perhaps the most disturbing characteristic of modern AI systems is their tendency toward "hallucination"—the generation of plausible-sounding but factually incorrect information. This tendency fundamentally challenges basic journalistic principles such as veracity and accuracy.

    A recent example: In December, CNN correspondent Clarissa Ward appeared on television for 12 minutes to report that she had encountered a prisoner in Syria's capital, Damascus, after dictator Bashar al-Assad was ousted. He claimed his name was Adel Ghurbal, but fact-checkers determined his real name was Salama Mohammad Salama, who was actually a lieutenant in Assad's air force.

    This example shows that the boundaries between human error and machine misinformation are blurring. The challenge is exacerbated by the fact that responsibility for faulty AI-generated content remains legally and ethically unclear.

    In this regard, the German Press Council has clarified that the Press Code applies without restriction to AI-assisted content, and that editorial responsibility remains with humans. But what does this mean in practice if an AI system produces misinformation that an overworked editor fails to detect in a timely manner?

    The fight for intellectual property

    Behind the ethical debates, a bitter economic war rages: the question of copyright. Many publishers complain that their articles have been used to train AI models without permission, raising both legal and ethical issues. The NUJ (National Union of Journalists) has explicitly stated that its members do not authorize the use of their copyrighted works for AI training.

    Felix Simon, a researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute, identified a “familiar power imbalance” between news publishers and technology companies that is being exacerbated by AI adoption. The media companies that have produced content for decades now find themselves in the position of having their work used, without compensation, to train systems that could potentially make them obsolete.

    It is a paradox of Kafkaesque proportions: the industry that is supposed to democratize information is threatened by its own production.

    Jobs in the algorithm age

    Concerns about jobs are not unfounded. A recent survey of media professionals found that 57.2% of journalists fear that AI will replace more jobs in the coming years. Already, 21% of the journalists surveyed report having lost their jobs due to AI implementation.

    A shocking example from Poland: The Polish radio station OFF Radio Krakow caused an international stir in October 2024 when it fired about a dozen journalists and replaced them with AI-generated presenters. The station even broadcast an “interview” with the late Nobel laureate Wisława Szymborska, who died in 2012.

    Mateusz Demski, a dismissed journalist, launched a petition against the "replacement of employees with artificial intelligence." Over 23,000 people signed the petition. After just one week of intense protests, the broadcaster canceled the planned three-month "experiment"—a rare case of public opposition reversing an AI implementation.

    But the fear goes deeper than just job concerns. This development goes hand in hand with a more fundamental concern about the loss of human identity and autonomy in journalism, which over 60% of respondents expressed.

    What does it mean for a democracy when the voices that inform its citizens are no longer human?

    Public trust: a broken social contract?

    The German public is reacting with marked skepticism to the AI revolution in the media. The Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2024 confirms this trend: Half of German respondents feel uncomfortable with predominantly AI-generated news.

    Particularly noteworthy: Even young adults, who are generally more open to AI-generated news, view political information from AI sources with similar skepticism as older respondents.

    A worrying finding shows that people generally distrust news sources—regardless of whether an article was written by an AI or a human journalist. This points to a deeper crisis of trust that goes far beyond the AI debate.

    The central question is: Can media regain trust by being more transparent about their use of AI, or does transparency paradoxically increase mistrust?

    International Perspectives: Lessons from the World

    In Indonesia offers newsrooms valuable insights into the challenges of semi-automated journalism. A literature review of the past five years found that while AI can increase efficiency, significant deficits exist in content quality. The study emphasizes the need to train journalists in the responsible use of AI.

    In the USA A comprehensive study by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University, which surveyed over 130 journalists from 35 media companies, shows that openness to AI technologies is driven not only by technical improvements, but also by market pressure and hope for new business models.

    The lesson: AI adoption is not a purely technical phenomenon, but a deeply economic and cultural one.

    Future perspectives: The next stage of evolution

    Florian Schmidt of the APA fact-checking team predicts that AI-generated images and videos will hardly be recognizable as such within a few months. Science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar warns that "for the first time in human history, language is no longer a human monopoly."

    This development has fundamental implications for democracy, the economy and jurisprudence. If authentic communication can no longer be distinguished from synthetic communication, we must rethink our entire systems of truth-finding.

    Some estimate that up to 90% of online content could be synthetically generated by 2026. In such a world, the role of journalism will not disappear—it will fundamentally shift, becoming a curator of authenticity in an ocean of the synthetic.

    Recommendations for action: A compass through the storm

    Concrete recommendations for action can be derived from international experience and scientific findings:

    For media companies:

    • Implementation of strict transparency standards: Any use of AI should be clearly marked
    • Investment in education: Continuous training of journalists in the use of AI
    • Ethical frameworks: Development of in-house guidelines for the use of AI
    • Human-in-the-Loop: Ensuring human control over all editorial decisions

    For regulators:

    • Clarification of the AI Act: Clarification of the terms “editorial control” and transparency obligations
    • International coordination: Collaboration in developing global standards
    • Enforcement mechanisms: Effective enforcement of existing regulations

    For society:

    • Media literacy: Education in recognizing AI-generated content
    • Critical awareness: Questioning information sources
    • Supporting high-quality media: Conscious consumer decisions

    Epilogue: The moment of decision

    We are at a historic turning point. The extended implementation period of the EU AI Act until 2027 could prove problematic, as the damage caused by unregulated AI use may become irreversible.

    The future of journalism will not be determined by whether AI is used, but rather by how responsibly and ethically this integration is carried out. The development of robust ethical guidelines, continuous training of media professionals, and increased public awareness are crucial to maintaining public trust and ensuring the democratic function of journalism.

    Vincent Berthier of Reporters Without Borders summed it up: Deepfakes are a “weapon against journalism” because they both undermine trust in the media and exploit the trustworthiness of the media for disinformation purposes.

    The irony of the story: A technology that promised to provide us with infinite knowledge could herald the end of truth. It's up to all of us—journalists, technologists, regulators, and citizens—to ensure this doesn't happen.
